Malioboro, From Time to Time

Yogyakarta, known as the city of culture, the city of education, and the city of tourism that people will call this city with 'Jogja' to make it simple. There are many places to visit in Jogja, such as Museum Tugu, Monjali, Taman Budaya, keraton, and another places also the building that became historical place. But the central place that people should visit is Malioboro as the central of tourism, Malioboro is the central of business for the seller and the most activity in this place is shopping. There is an assumption from visitor that has said “You don’t come to Jogja if you don’t come to Malioboro”. This place is the central to buy everything that will become souvenir such as traditional food like bakpia, brem, patholo and another food, handicraft, T-shirt, batik, shoes, and many more from local product, and this one is the big asset from this city. Actually, Malioboro is the name of street in Yogyakarta which is called Jl. Malioboro.

Malioboro is the most famous place in Yogyakarta, but behind the history of Malioboro from time to time this place is changing. About 90 years ago, Malioboro was not so famous as now, and there many differences between Malioboro in the past and now-days.

Back to 90 years ago, the view of Malioboro was not crowded as now, people who came in that place was local inhabitant, where the clothes still followed in that era (old fashion). But now-days, as we can see, Malioboro is changing; there are many sellers along Jl. Malioboro. This place become very crowed especially in week end (Saturday and Monday), people from many places, tourist from foreign country of domestic, and the visitors that fashionable with many and varied design clothes in their own way.

In the past time, Malioboro looked clean, fresh, and there was not too much vehicles so people around there still got the fresh air, and they still use traditional transportation such as Andhong, Becak, and the most favorite one is Onthel, and old fashion of vehicles and one thing that they respect pedestrian. But now, in the street, all of the type of vehicles there, crowded along the street, and pedestrian now has difficulties to cross. Then the condition of air, just there is limited fresh air because pollution now-days are dominant.   

The differences between Malioboro in the past time and now are the condition of location that in the past time the view of Malioboro still rare of sellers but now the sellers infest along the street, especially in front of stores porch who offers their merchandise.

The differences between two times that apparently view of beggars. Now-days there are many beggars in Malioboro. It shows conditional changes that effect of people around there, and it’s not a good view, because sometimes it will makes people or visitors feels uncomfortable. Back to the past time, the view of that phenomenon was rare, but now it becomes common.

Different life style in the past time and now-days make Malioboro known as the central tourism of Yogyakarta, for example; now in Malioboro there are so many building of central fashion, the store along the streets and Mall. The different thing that really specific of Malioboro is about the modernism and life style that change from time to time.
